Civic Center founder George Wallace opened the Alice Wallace "Gallery of the Universe" in 1970 as an educational and recreational facility for children and adults alike.

With astronomy and space exploration fairly
new concepts in the late 60's and early 70's, Americans were fascinated by this novel phenomenon, and the planetarium served as an opportunity for Massachusetts residents to become educated on the world beyond.

The Planetarium has served as a popular learning facility for many years, attracting people from all over New England to it's special events including moon rock exhibits, spaceship replica presentations, and weekend space camps.

As part of the Civic Center's ongoing renovation project, the Planetarium is temporarily closed.

Re-opening is scheduled for 2006.
